More lawmakers ante up on health insurance Providence Journal

PROVIDENCE — The number of legislators voluntarily paying a portion of the cost of their free health-care packages — costing up to $18,061 annually — has grown over the last week, along with the number of lawmakers forgoing both the coverage and the opportunity to collect a $2,002 waiver payment.

A week ago, The Journal published a rundown of who was paying, who was not, and who was taking the waiver payment. At that point, eight legislators were paying nothing, including Rep. David Segal, D-Providence, Senate Majority Whip Dominick Ruggerio, D-Providence, and Sen. James Doyle, D-Pawtucket.

Segal has since volunteered to pay 20 percent of the premium cost of his coverage, and Doyle, 10 percent, while Ruggerio has dropped his state coverage entirely and opted to take the waiver payment, according to spokesmen for the House and Senate.

In the intervening week, two other lawmakers in line to receive waiver payments decided not to take them: Rep.
