Students at Pleasantville and Ocean City high schools joined thousands of others across the state in a walkout Tuesday to protest school cuts proposed by Gov. Chris Christie.
While it was unclear how many of the state’s 406,000 public high school students participated, more than 2,000 students in Newark left classes and rallied in City Hall. A Facebook page used to organize protests had more than 17,000 fans by Tuesday, and walkouts were reported from Mount Holly to Montclair.
At Pleasantville, about a dozen students sat on the curb in front of the high school, their thumbs tapping cell phone keys as a school administrator asked them what they were doing outside.
The students didn’t answer.
The administrator went inside.
With authority out of listening range, the students chatted about everything from classroom student-teacher ratios to shoddy lunchroom food.
Seniors Efrain Morales and Gerardo Soto, both 18, are concerned about the effects program and staff cuts could have on student morale.
